Silver has been used in various applications such as in food, water purification, and medical materials for a long time because it inhibits activities of many bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. However, silver ion also does harm to the environment and the human body as a heavy metal ion. As Ag+ could bind to many metabolites and inactivate sulfhydryl enzymes, it may produce dose-dependent cytopathogenic effects in distinct cell types. Besides, Ag+ can selectively bind to cytosine−cytosine (C−C) mismatches and forms C−Ag+−C complexes in DNA duplexes, which may interfere in the replication and transcription of DNA. Thus, it is of great importance to study the interaction of Ag+ with DNA and develop highly sensitive detection method for Ag+.
