Macro-Etching Examination

Macro-etching examination provides detailed information about metal structure such as grain size, inclusions, segregation, flow line, columnar structure and dendrites to reveal the metal's microstructure. Macro-etching is used extensively in the fabrication of metals to reveal potential problems with the weld for quality control. The common problems that can be revealed by macro-etching examination include defects in the weld metal, such as porosity or inclusions; defects in the heat-affected zone, such as carburization / decarburization, carbide precipitation or intergranular corrosion; and surface defects, such as slag inclusions or surface roughness.

Examination Procedures

  1. Prepare the specimen of the weld metal with a fine finish.
  2. Etch the specimen with an acid solution to reveal the metal's microstructure.
  3. Exame the specimen under a microscope to look for any defects.

Applications of Macro-Etching Examination

  • Detect detection
  • Process monitoring
  • Material characterization
  • Failure analysis
  • Quality assurance
  • Research and development

STEMart performs macro-etching examination to reveal surface cracks, laps, seams, porosity, and other discontinuities that may affect the material's integrity and performance, helping manufacturers take corrective measures to prevent further propagation or failure.
