Corrosion Inhibitor Testing

Corrosion inhibitors refer to those chemical compounds are typically added to a metal or alloy to effectively prevent corrosion of metal or alloy material in environmental media and keep their original physical and mechanical properties unchanged. Reasonable use of corrosion inhibitors can significantly reduce the corrosion rate of metal materials in the medium to zero. Especially in the production and processing of petroleum products, chemical cleaning, atmospheric environment, industrial water and petrochemical production, corrosion inhibition technology has become one of the main anti-corrosion methods.

STEMart carries out a variety of corrosion inhibitor testing under simulated operating conditions to evaluate the protective efficiency, and determine the compatibility with the production fluids and other chemical additives present the same systems.

Test Capabilities

Corrosion rate testing

The performance of corrosion inhibitor is evaluated by the corrosion rate of the metal. The corrosion efficiency and the best use condition of corrosion inhibitor is determined by testing the corrosion rate of the metal before and after addition of the corrosion inhibitor to the corrosive medium under different conditions.

Test method for corrosion rate

  • Metal loss method
    • Weight-loss method: Determine the corrosion rate of the metal sample by weighing its mass loss after re-invading the corrosion medium for a certain period of time. Weight-loss method is a direct method that is suitable for evaluating the protective performance of the inhibitor on overall corrosion.
    • Volumetric method: Suitable for long-term inhibitor evaluations by ultrasonic inspection and electric resistance (ER) probe monitoring
    • Radiometric method
  • Electrochemical method
    • Potentiodynamic polarization methods
    • Linear polarization resistance (LPR)
    • Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
    • Electrochemical noise (EN)

Compatibility testing

  • Compatibility with metallic materials
  • Compatibility with non-metallic materials
  • Foam test
  • Emulsion test
  • Sticky deposit
  • Storage stability
  • Solvent loss
  • Solubility and solvent compatibility test
  • Thermal stability test
  • Oil/water partitioning test
