Detection of Flavonoids in Plant Tissues

Flavonoids are a group of polyphenolic compounds that are very abundant in vegetables, fruits, flowers, and seeds, responsible for the color, fragrance, and flavor characteristics. As secondary metabolites, Flavonoids participate in plant development, growth, and ripening and play essential roles in many responses of plants to biotic and abiotic stresses. For example, they contribute to the colors of flowers to attract animals, and protect plants against viruses, fungi, bacteria, and herbivores. In addition, plant flavonoids can act as signal molecules, UV filters, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers and have several functional roles in drought, heat, and freezing tolerance.

The flavonoids display a variety of biological activities of interest to the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food sectors. A number of therapeutic properties have been ascribed to flavonoids, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anticancer, antiparasitic, antiviral, anti-oxidant, neuroprotective properties, as well as prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis.

The amount of flavonoids depends on many factors, such as plant cultivar/genotype, growing environment conditions, soil characteristics, harvest, and storage. STEMart is able to identify the composition and determine the content of flavonoids in the plant tissues.
