Gas Testing

Gas testing is used to detect and measure the concentrations of various, often hazardous or otherwise unwanted components in indoor air as well as fuel, process, and waste gases.

Importance of Gas Testing

  • Ensure safety in confined spaces.
  • Detect the presence of flammable gas or flammable vapors that can lead to fires or explosions.
  • Check if the oxygen content is at a safe level.
  • Detect the presence of harmful or toxic gas hazards.

Test Methods

  • Gas Chromatography (GC): GC is a common analytical technique to separate and measure the concentrations of each component in all types of gas samples from natural and biogas to indoor air. The combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (MS) can be used to obtain more in-depth information on the gas's composition. Suitable for detection of inorganic gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, helium, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, and organic gas such as methane, ethylene and acrylic.
  • Fourier Transform Infrared Technology (FTIR): FTIR, which is based on IR spectroscopy, is used in the analysis of the composition of gases.
  • Non-Dispersive Infrared Technology (NDIR): NDIR is used to measure the concentration of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, methane, ethylene, propane, acetylene, etc.
  • Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA): Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) is connected to a detector like GC or GC-MS to analyze gases evolved from a solid or liquid sample upon thermal decomposition. Other analyte-specific detectors may also be used.
  • Chemiluminescence Technology: Chemiluminescence is suitable for analysis of sulfide, nitrogen oxide, and ammonia.
