Determination of transparency of water by the Seidler disc method (CAT#: STEM-PPA-0063-LJX)

Introduction

It has been more than 100 years since the Seidler disc (transparency disc) was used to observe the transparency of water. Initially, this method was mainly used in aquaculture. Later, with the development of environmental protection, the observation index of transparency is used not only to judge the quality of water environment and the degree of eutrophication of water, but also to judge the grade of water quality, water nutrition level, water primary productivity and so on.

Principle

The transparency disc (also known as the Sayman disc) is made of a thick sheet of white iron, a round plate with a diameter of 200mm. One side of the round plate is divided into four sections from the center, painted in black and white. Make a small hole in the center of the disc, thread a lead wire, and add a plumb hammer under it. Tie a small string to the lead wire and make a mark with colored thread or paint every 10cm on the string.
Place the disc in the backlight of the ship into the water, and gradually sink until the white surface of the disc can not be seen, and record its scale, that is, the transparency number, in cm. The observation should be repeated two to three times.

Applications

For detecting the transparency of liquids

Procedure

1. Make a Serge plate
2. Put the disc into the water in the backlight of the ship, and gradually sink until the white color of the disc cannot be seen, and record the scale
3. Repeat Step 2 two to three times

Materials

• Sample Type:
Water

Notes

After the transparency plate is used for a long time, the color of the white paint will gradually turn yellow and must be repainted.
