Determination of transparency of water by the transmitted light method (CAT#: STEM-PPA-0071-LJX)

Introduction

As an important parameter to describe the optical properties and visibility of water bodies, transparency can directly reflect the clarity and turbidity of lake water. Therefore, transparency is an important index to measure the quality of water quality and evaluate the eutrophication of lakes, and it is also an indispensable item in the investigation of water quality of reservoirs, lakes and surface water.

Principle

Many substances suspended in water have an absorption or blocking effect on visible light, which is manifested as a reduction in the transparency of the water. Therefore, the transparency of water can be calculated by measuring the absorbance of a substance in water to light.

Applications

For detecting the transparency of liquids

Procedure

1. Dip the transparency sensor into the liquid to be measured
2. Read and measure the absorbance of the liquid to a specific wavelength beam
3. Use specific curves for fitting and calculation to complete the measurement of transparency data

Materials

• Sample Type:
Water

Notes

The test should be repeated 2-3 times to ensure the reliability of the results.
