Open Field Test (CAT#: STEM-AE-0010-WXH)

Introduction

Open field test (OFT), also called open box test, is a commonly used animal behavior experiment. OFT can detect the loco-motor activity and exploratory behavior of rats or mice, and is a method to evaluate the autonomous behavior, exploratory behavior and tension of experimental animals in novel environments. For example, animals are afraid of the new open environment, so they mainly move around in the peripheral area, and less in the central area, but the exploration characteristics of animals make them have the motivation to move in the central area. The frequency and duration of certain behaviors of experimental animals in novel environments are used to reflect the autonomous behavior and exploratory behavior of experimental animals in unfamiliar environments, and the tension is reflected by the frequency of urination and defecation.<br />The related disease research fields involved in the open field include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, schizophrenia, anxiety/depression, Huntington's disease, etc.

Applications

• Observing the autonomous behavior, exploration behavior and tension of experimental animals in novel environments
• Screening normal and uniformly active animals
• Anxiety research
• Drug R&D and Development

Procedure

The experiment was carried out in a quiet environment. The animal is placed in the center of the bottom surface of the box, and the video and timing are performed simultaneously. After observing for a certain period of time, stop taking pictures and clean the inner wall and bottom surface of the square box, so as to prevent the remaining information of the animal (such as the size and smell of the animal) from affecting the next test result. Change the animal and continue the experiment.
