Introduction

Methanol (also called methyl alcohol and wood spirit, amongst other names) is an organic chemical and the simplest aliphatic alcohol, with the formula CH3OH (a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group, often abbreviated as MeOH). It is a light, volatile, colorless and flammable liquid with a distinctive alcoholic odour similar to that of ethanol (potable alcohol).
Methanol is primarily used as an industrial solvent to help create inks, resins, adhesives and dyes. It is also used as a solvent in the manufacture of important pharmaceutical ingredients and products such as cholesterol, streptomycin, vitamins and hormones.

XES is an element-specific method primarily used to analyze the partially occupied electronic structure of materials. The technique is one of the photon-in-photon-out spectroscopies in which an incident X-ray photon is used to excite a core electron, which leads to the transition of the electron from the ground state to the excited state, and then the excited state of the electron decays with the emission of an X-ray photon in order to fill the core hole.
