This weak cation-exchange medium is designed for capture, intermediate purification, and polishing of biological products. It uses a polymethyl methacrylate matrix with a hydrophilic surface modification. Carboxymethyl groups provide weak cation-exchange functionality. The 80 µm particles support high flow with stable bed geometry. A 1000 Å pore size permits biomolecule access through the porous matrix. The high ion-exchange capacity supports a lysozyme loading of at least 105 mg/mL. Strong mechanical properties limit compression during large-scale operation. The medium can be regenerated with sodium chloride and cleaned with sodium hydroxide or ethanol.
