Thrombopoietin (TPO), also known as megakaryocyte growth and development factor (MGDF), is a glycoprotein hormone produced by liver parenchymal cells, hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells, and renal tubular cells. There is also small expression in striated muscle and bone marrow stromal cells. It can stimulate the secretion and differentiation of megakaryocytes to form a large number of platelets.
