Sorbitol MacConkey Agar (SMAC) uses D-sorbitol as a carbohydrate source instead of lactose, allowing differentiation between E. coli O157:H7 (which produces colorless colonies due to sorbitol non-fermentation) and non-O157 E. coli strains (which appear red from sorbitol fermentation).
