Description

The virus sampling tube set is used to collect a specimen from a patient and carry it to a testing laboratory. The swab is placed in a tube containing preservation medium, then broken at its marked point so the tip stays in the liquid. The medium used here contains a guanidinium salt that inactivates respiratory viruses within ten minutes of contact. Inactivation means the specimen can be handled and transported with far less risk to the people processing it. The same medium keeps the nucleic acid stable, so downstream extraction and amplification still work. Two tube sizes are offered with either three or six millilitres of medium, and with one, two or ten swabs. Tubes are moulded from polypropylene with a flat screw cap, and they stay intact during storage at minus eighty degrees. Storage and transport before use take place at room temperature, with a stated shelf life of twelve months. After sampling, an inactivated specimen can stay at room temperature for two weeks, whereas non inactivated material is held cold for three days.
