The automatic plate sealer applies a sealing film to microplates used in amplification and storage work. A reliable closure prevents evaporation during thermal cycling and stops wells contaminating one another. Sealing is done cold, so the contents of the plate are not exposed to heat at any point. The plate is placed in the single holder by hand, started from the key pad, and taken out sealed a few seconds later. Film is advanced automatically between plates, which removes one handling step per plate. Several plate formats sharing the same footprint are accepted, including deep well plates and amplification plates. Sealing pressure is adjustable, so a weak seal or a crushed plate can both be avoided. A complete sealing cycle takes well under half a minute, which keeps pace with plate preparation in a busy laboratory. Communication interfaces are reserved so that the unit can be built into an automated line when required.
