The Abbott Cell Dyn 3500 Fully Automated Hematology Analyzer uses dual technology to provide the basis for the five-part WBC difference. Multi-Angle Polarization Scattering Separation (M.A.P.S.S.) provides primary white blood cell counts, all differential information, and reticulocyte analysis, while impedance characterization provides additional information in the presence of vulnerable lymphocytes and hypotonic anti-erythrocytes.

The Cell Dyn 3500 Hematology Analyzer features extended WBC and PLT linearity, RBC and WBC count correction indices. The Cell Dyn 3500 also features an auto-start cycle designed to start the flow system and check background counts. This Abbott analyzer automatically performs a shutdown cycle and puts itself in standby mode. It offers open and closed sampling options on two instrument versions.

Patient reports can be customized to include the following information: patient identification, 22 parameter and limit sets, color cytograms, color histograms, and manually differentially transcribed regions on color printouts. The 540 MB hard drive provides onboard storage for 10,000 patient reports. The multitasking system allows data editing while processing samples.
