IGFs, or Insulin-like Growth Factors, are a family of polypeptide growth factors that stimulate the proliferation and survival of various cell types, including muscle, bone, and cartilage tissues. IGFs are primarily produced by the liver, although different tissues produce them at different times. They belong to the insulin gene family and share structural and functional similarities with insulin, but their growth-promoting activity is significantly higher than that of insulin. The expression of IGF-II is influenced by placental lactogen, while the expression of IGF-I is regulated by growth hormone. Both IGF-I and IGF-II signal through the tyrosine kinase type I receptor (IGF-IR), and IGF-II can also signal through the IGF-II/mannose-6-phosphate receptor.
Mature IGFs are produced through proteolytic cleavage of inactive precursor proteins that contain N-terminal and C-terminal propeptide regions.
The lyophilized form can be stored at 2-8°C for 24 months. For aliquoting, it can be reconstituted using sterile water, saline, culture medium, or PBS. After reconstitution, it is recommended to divide it into smaller portions and store at -20°C for 6 months or -80°C for 12 months, with a final diluted concentration of no less than 100 μg/mL, while avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
