Introduction

In areas such as environmental monitoring, food processing, assessment of public health hazards and medical diagnosis, it is important to screen rapidly for the presence of pathogenic microorganisms, and especially to identify them accurately. Traditional bacteriological techniques, such as culture on selective medium or biochemical activity tests,1 are often time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, mass spectrometry presents an attractive alternative for bacterial differentiation.
