Micro Method Determination of Boiling Point of Hydrocarbons (CAT#: STEM-PPA-0135-YJL)

Introduction

Hydrocarbon is any of a class of organic chemical compounds composed only of the elements carbon (C) and hydrogen (H). The carbon atoms join together to form the framework of the compound, and the hydrogen atoms attach to them in many different configurations. Hydrocarbons are the principal constituents of petroleum and natural gas. They serve as fuels and lubricants as well as raw materials for the production of plastics, fibres, rubbers, solvents, explosives, and industrial chemicals.

Principle

The boiling point of a compound is the temperature at which it changes from a liquid to a gas under a certain pressure. This is a physical property often used to identify substances or to check the purity of the compound. Boiling point is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid exactly equals the pressure exerted on it, causing the liquid to "boil" or change to the gas phase. If the volume of the liquid is small, it is more advantageous to use the micro method.

Applications

Chemical industry

Procedure

1. Place the liquid is in a small test tube
2. Install the device
3. Heat
4. Remove the heat
5. Read the thermometer and record the temperature when the bubbles stop

Materials

• Sample Type: liquid
