Laser Hardening Service

Laser hardening is a heat-treating process using high power diode lasers to improve strength and durability of defined surface areas. Unlike other processes, the laser can be very selective, hardening only targeted areas of steel and cast-iron metals.

Laser hardening is a high-tech technology for a rapid surface partial quenching process. This method is mainly used to strengthen the surface of parts, which can improve the surface hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, strength, and high-temperature performance of metal materials and parts; at the same time, the core of the parts can still maintain good toughness, making the parts more durable. The mechanical properties are characterized by good wear resistance, high impact toughness, and high fatigue strength. Laser hardening can greatly improve product quality and exponentially extend the service life of products. It has significant economic benefits and has been widely used in many products in various industries.

Compared with conventional hardening processes, laser surface hardening has a short history of development. However, judging from the results achieved, laser surface hardening is a new surface hardening process with many characteristics. Its main features are:

  • High-speed heating and high-speed self-cooling of the material surface.
  • The surface hardness of the workpiece after laser hardening treatment is high, 5-20% higher than that of conventional quenching, and an extremely fine hardened layer structure can be obtained.
  • Due to the fast laser heating speed, the heat affected zone is small and the quenching stress and deformation are small.
  • Parts with complex shapes and parts that cannot be processed by other conventional methods can be locally hardened. At the same time, different laser hardening treatments can also be performed on different parts of the same part as needed.
  • The laser hardening process cycle is short, the production efficiency is high, the process is easy to realize computer control, the degree of automation is high, and it can be incorporated into the production line.
  • Laser hardening relies on heat conduction from the surface to the inside for self-cooling, without the need for cooling medium, and has no pollution to the environment.

Compared with the traditional heat treatment process, laser surface phase change hardening has the advantages of refined hardened layer structure, high hardness, small deformation, precise and controllable hardened layer depth, and no need for quenching medium. It can be used for carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron, The surfaces of parts made of titanium alloy, aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and other materials are hardened.
