Buffered Saline (BS) utilizes phosphoric acid as a pH buffer to maintain a physiological (neutral) pH, similar to the body's internal environment. It contains inorganic salts (e.g., sodium) to provide proper osmotic balance, making it suitable for animal cell culture and experiments.
Among the common types, DPBS (Dulbecco’s Phosphate-Buffered Saline) and PBS (Phosphate-Buffered Saline) are basic physiological saline buffers containing only essential inorganic salts. These solutions are not nutrient-enriched and thus do not support long-term cell proliferation unless supplemented with additional growth factors or serum.
