Determining the drop point of cooling oil by Ubbelohde method (CAT#: STEM-PPA-0199-LJX)

Introduction

The crystal substance has a definite melting point in the solid-liquid phase transformation process, while the amorphous substance and the mixture of cooling oil have no definite melting point, and the drop point is determined by Ubbelohde method. The application of Ulster's method is wide and the development is fast. The West German Industrial Standard (DIN) was the first to adopt this method.




Principle

A dedicated one tenth of a degree resolution thermometer is directly immersed in contact with the sample residing in a cup. The setup is positioned in a test tube and the heating is performed with a water bath. The drop point temperature should be recorded as soon as the first drop of sample is visually detected. The results of this test are strongly dependent on the operator's experience.

Applications

For drop point determination of non-crystalline materials such as synthetic and natural products

Procedure

Notes
