Determination of total organic carbon in wastewater containing benzoic acid by supercritical water oxidation technology (CAT#: STEM-PPA-0128-LJX)

Introduction

Benzoic acid exists widely in nature in the form of free acids, esters or their derivatives. It is mainly used in the preparation of sodium benzoate preservatives, and used in the synthesis of drugs, dyes, but also used in the production of plasticizers, mordants, fungicides and spices. Waste water containing benzoic acid will pollute the environment and do harm to human health. This service uses supercritical water oxidation technology to determine the total organic carbon in benzoic acid wastewater.

Principle

When the temperature and pressure are above the critical point of water (375 ℃ and 3200 psi), the organic waste is rapidly and completely oxidized by the oxidant in the water. Supercritical water can oxidize organic carbon to carbon dioxide very efficiently and quickly. The advantage of supercritical water oxidation is that the oxidation is complete and rapid, and high salt compounds can be tolerated.

Applications

For the determination of total organic carbon in liquids

Procedure

1. Mix the sample, ultra-pure water and oxidizer in proportion to the low pressure gradient mixer
2. The mixed liquid enters the reaction tube and reacts fully under high temperature and pressure conditions in the reactor
3. The liquid after the reaction enters the gas-liquid separation device and is aerated by high purity nitrogen
4. The aerated gas is dried by the dryer and enters the non-dispersive infrared detector for CO2 content detection
5. Organic carbon is converted to CO2 under the condition of supercritical water oxidation, and the amount of CO2 generated by oxidation is proportional to the signal intensity of the infrared detector, so the content of organic matter in the test water sample can be analyzed according to the signal of the infrared detector

Materials

• Sample Type:
Wastewater containing benzoic acid

Notes

Oxidant multiple is an important factor affecting total organic carbon (TOC) conversion. With the increase of oxidizer multiple,TOC conversion rate also increased gradually.
