Troponin (Tn) is a regulatory protein of muscle tissue contraction, located in the fine myofilaments of contractile protein, and plays an important regulatory role in the process of muscle contraction and relaxation. It contains three subtypes: fast -, slow - and cardiac troponin (cTn). While the first two are associated with skeletal muscle, cardiac troponin is found only in cardiac cells and is a complex composed of three subunits, troponin T (cTnT), troponin I (cTnI), and troponin C (cTnC). cTnT and cTnI are antigens specific to cardiomyocytes. cTnI, with a molecular weight of 23.88 KDa, is degraded from myocardial fibers when cardiomyocytes are damaged. Elevated serum cTn reflects myocardial cell damage, and its specificity and sensitivity are higher than those of the commonly used myocardial enzyme profiles.
